If you really want to become a web designer expert you should first consider your reasons for wanting to achieve this status. In most cases a professional finds that it is high time his or her opinions should be taken seriously or wishes to be valued and respected for the work done.

Becoming an expert, however, involves more issues than getting people to listen to you, so you should consider if you can manage the other aspects that came with being an expert, if you want to deserve your aspired for position.

Having people respect you is not the only thing people will be concerned about once you are considered as an expert. People will also realize that, because you are an expert you are going to charge more, and may not consider you as a prospective web designer for their project. However, although the higher rates may be a constraint for many possible clients there are advantages you can work with, which will help you with projects and gain better quality projects.

An expert is generally, deemed so, after four years of work in a particular field and dedicated practice. Time and experience certainly work towards gaining this objective and there is no doubt that experience and the time you passed within your industry will help you achieve an expert position. The longer you have been at your job, the more experience you will have reaped from the various projects, allowing you to have a more flexible attitude to problems that may occur, helping you solve these issues easily.

Although other web developers and designers may argue that the industry moves at such a swift pace that all the experience you have put together over the past four years may not be useful to you today. Experience in working with projects cannot be argued, as although the technology does evolve rapidly, the development of a website does involve a lot of user experience training and human factors, which do not change.

The years of experience you have accumulated will help you face up to problems and different scenarios more efficiently, even though challenges are different, the fact remains that there are common concerns in each specific project.

This does not mean that experience is the only element that is essential for a web designer, and this is especially true when you need to employ someone new for your team. What does matter is how stimulated this person is in his or her job and the desire to accomplish good work as well as the passion they have for their projects. If a web designer does not really feel for web designing then it will be difficult to create effective websites or learn new concepts and trends.

If you really want to become an expert then you need to really have a passion for your job, otherwise you will not succeed in becoming a true expert in your field. You also need to dare, even if you will probably make mistakes, as you have to be able to establish credibility by having experimented with your own ideas and concepts, if you want to stand out from the crowd.

Believe it or not video games can help web designers create a more effective website, as nowadays, they are becoming very similar to many of the website interfaces and vice versa websites are starting to have the same characteristics as certain game platforms.

Take the examples of those websites that provide answers and add credibility points if you win by providing an answer to the questions users have proposed. This system works to drive users to these websites, as it plays on the psychology people have to succeed and compete with others, thus encouraging interaction and driving traffic to that particular website.

Video game interfaces often come with a very intuitive and user-friendly structured layout, which is what a website should have in the first place. These video games can handle many frequent and repetitive actions in the least possible clicks. They also have the advantage of being engaging and attractive to the eye, thus popular with users. A well defined video game aims at an enhanced user-experience, and provides information without breaking the line of thought and fantasy. All distraction while the game is in process will naturally result in a failure of the game’s purpose.

If you think about it this is exactly what a website should provide, content and information that is easy to access, understand as well as being engaging and interesting. Users do not want to pass their time having to scroll and click incessantly; this is why web designers can learn a lot by studying the interaction video games provide and the ease in navigation.

A web designer can learn other useful options when studying video games, which do not simply relate to the user interface. The psychological aspect is also fundamental as it works on the sense of achievement a website can provide its users with.

When creating a website by studying the video game interfaces you need to keep in mind what objectives your client has, as you will most likely be set on different goals as opposed to video game websites. One of the most important priorities in websites is efficiency rather than entertainment; however, this does not mean that it cannot be interactive, so it is important to determine which UI components are relevant to your particular project.

You will also have to consider the method and structure of a website, as for example the way your menus are structured and how you can fit them in the layout to enhance usability. In video game interfaces you often have a hug and spoke structure that leads users to various sets of tools within the menu. You make your choice according to what you need for the game, providing users with a simple structure that offers a specific set of options to choose from. This type of menu offers a straightforward browsing method that avoids any confusion as it allows users to focus on one choice at a time.

If you provide your readers with one piece of information or task each time, this will definitely provide a better user experience and will increase your conversion rate and add to your clients’ customer portfolio.

As a web designer, especially if you are a good one you will find that your services are sought after, as practically all businesses need a website to promote their services or products. However, it is also true that many of these potential clients, do not always appreciate the value of your work and will often try and take advantage of your profession, more so if you are new to the industry.

Some clients may even calculate the time they presume you will spend on their project and offer a retribution based on their own unrealistic calculations, as they cannot possibly understand what effort and work is involved when planning and creating a project.

This attitude people have towards web designers can be both frustrating and financially tiresome. This is why it is essential you safeguard yourself from this negative attitudes and common behavior. There are ways you can keep all these issues in place as well as your clients and safeguard your work.

The first issue to consider when you have found a project is to be clear from the start and prepare a contract with your terms of service. This is where all issues regarding basic agreements for the projects are discussed, as well as what your client is to expect from you and what he or she is responsible for.

Having a contract drawn up is a good idea, as if you have all the terms down on paper, this will assure you that all the points are clear and protect you from any future problems. Make sure you add all the essential issues in the contract and terms of service.

These points should include the deliverables, contributions, revisions, payment terms and cancellation.

In the deliverables section you should state what exactly you are expected to provide your client with, making it clear that you have fully understood his or her requirements. The contributions section is where you should state and provide some information about the process you intend to follow and what you expect your client to do in return. This is an important section as it will allow for a more fluid project and avoid confusion on various project issues.

The revisions point is very important, so make sure you clearly underline what a revision is according to you, as you may not have the same definition as your client does. You do not want to end up having to go through endless revisions for the same price as the basic ones you feel are necessary. If necessary specify the number of revisions you think may be reasonable for the project.

The payment section of the contract is essential, as this is where you will state how much and how you wish to be paid. If you need a deposit and what percentage will this be of the overall project? Deposits are a good idea, as they will permit you to assess how serious your client is about the project. Whichever payment requirements you may decide on, make sure they are clearly stated in the contract.

You should include a cancellation clause as it can happen, giving a time limit by which the client may cancel the project and your terms or simply requesting a non-refundable deposit, to safeguard your work.

All good business men or women realize how important it is to make a client happy and sometimes, this involves agreeing that the client is always right. However, this is obviously not always true.

Web designers and developers have often had to change a carefully developed design or theme that presented a lovely color and pattern for an uglier version simply to please a client. Or again a logo that looked perfect at its original size has had to be adapted to double its size so that a client is sure his or her customers cannot help noticing the company’s brand. These requests can often irritate web designers and developers who have spent hours on the refinement of the content and design only to have to change everything again.

No matter, how irritating this may be, sometimes, clients have a plausible reason behind their requests. It is hard to admit but the web designing industry probably has the most biased opinions as far as ideas and projects are concerned. Often designers are so sure that they know much more than any client that they will not take any advice.

Even though you may be an expert in your field, this should not render you completely reticent to advice and new ideas you possibly are not aware of even if you are an expert. There is one key point to keep in mind, that business is business and profit is what you should be focusing on, whichever your business or niche is it applies to all business ventures.

This does not imply that a web designer’s opinions should not be voiced; on the contrary, however, they can be discussed and assessed to consider whether they will work. A web designer should lead his or her client through the process of the project and listen to what the client has to say too.

Often, the delays due to repetitive revisions and untimely requests on the part of clients are the result of a lack of communication. The relationship between a client and web designer is fundamental if a project is to succeed. The initial layout and information you give your clients and how you listen to his or her requests and consider them as plausible is important if you want your project to work smoothly.

The first step that should be taken even before starting to think of what design and tools you may need to create a website is to find out as much about the business as you can. If you do not know who and why users are likely to buy from that website, how are you going to know what elements you need to attract a particular category of people?

You may be an expert designer but you should admit that your client is more likely to have better knowledge when his or her business is at stake. This is why; you should take all the advice concerning the business and then develop a design around these facts. Get to know the company you are designing the website for and communicate with your client, only then are you likely to create a powerful website that will have an impact on users and generate sales for your client.

Most web designers and developers realize the impact social media networking has on the web industry, but unfortunately, very few amongst these use this means to promote their profession and find more projects. There are great possibilities using social networks that can boost your business, create sales and more leads. Here are a few secrets to help you use social media to its best potential.

Twitter and LinkedIn are two of the most important social networks that can be used to promote your brand and the following techniques can be used on these but are also adaptable to other popular social networks including Facebook, Quora, Yelp or others.

The first step to take is to create an effective and appealing profile, which should be consistent on all the social networks you are using. Keep in mind that users only browse through pages for a few seconds, so you really need to get their attention and those of your potential clients. Spend time writing a perfect profile on LinkedIn and create an appealing description about your person and profession on Twitter where you can pass some time, creating tweaks on how your service can be profitable to people.

LinkedIn is a social network that works well for web designers and developers; this is where you should spend your time. Here you will probably find your clients so it is important you join LinkedIn and the various discussion groups on the social network. People regularly post questions and discussions on various themes. You can use LinkedIn to find help and get some good advice relating to web development, if you join the right discussion group.

You can browse through other people’s profiles and send your portfolio; if you think you have found a potential client or anyone who you think may need work for their website. A very good way to promote your professionalism is by answering the questions people post on LinkedIn in the “answers” section on the search bar under “More.” There are hundreds of questions you can answer that can expose your skills.

Twitter is the place to go if you need to provide help to others. If you are a web designer, you can start searching keywords such as web designer, developer, logos, etc. and you may find people who need professionals for their websites. You can find more work, if you use social networks properly, it is not essential to know hundreds of people to get projects. What you should be doing, is targeting the right people on social networks, it is useless to send your credentials around to hundreds of people who would not be interested in your type of skills anyway.

Contacting someone for a possible project does not mean the person will provide you with a job. You need to use social networking to prove your worth and the value of your work. This may involve actually giving your professional advice and help for free, but it will also prove that you know a lot about your profession and you will be targeting the right people, who may need a web designer sooner or later.

The tools web designers use today are not as important as we think they are. Why? Simply, because in ten years all those CSS3, HTML5 and other tools web developers use will be surpassed. The average lifespan of these new technologies for the web is about five years; this means that a web expert today will be a beginner in a few years time.

This is why it is essential to keep an open mind when designing for the web. Reading and learning constantly is the key to a long term success and growth in development. The tools are not the essential element for a professional web designer; it is the experience and updates that count.

As a web designer you should create your own personal portfolio and not depend exclusively on what your clients provide you with. You should develop your own interesting projects that will be part of your personal experience. Although you will not be gaining immediately from the creation of your personal portfolio, it is an essential element for building your long-term professional career.

All professional web designers should provide their prospective clients with an impressive portfolio and client testimonials when they wish to win a project. So, work on this and create your own projects if you do not have the possibility to find any at the beginning of your career.

It is important to choose a definite field of expertise, as no client will believe you specialize in all fields and can provide quality work too. You should either specialize in design, programming or SEO or other web services, but not in all.

Once you have a good portfolio and have determined which area you will specialize in, you then have to search for projects. Do this carefully, and choose only projects that you are specialized in, in order to provide quality work and enhance your professionalism.

If a project does not feel right, it is better to turn it down rather than make a bad impression on a client, who may propose another more suitable project in the future.

Before you go ahead with a project, it is essential you clearly define all the crucial points with your client, as well as the documents you will need. Your client should clearly understand what it is she or he is receiving from you, so that there are not any problems as you get on with your project. A clear relationship with your client right from the start will lead to a successful result.

When developing and designing a website, the user should always be in your thoughts. Although you may be carried away with design and special effects, all these can be useless if the readers do not know how to use them and cannot relate to the website. Think about what users would want to see on the website and how to make it as user-friendly as possible. Use your client’s experience with his or her customers to help you develop the website around the users’ requirements, and only then work at an effective design.

Focusing only on daily projects and work is damaging for a freelance web designer in the long term. It is fundamental for a freelancer to work on project that will help increase his or her skills otherwise sooner or later this passive way of working will hurt a freelancer’s career.

In order to work at expanding your vision with regards to daily projects, it is essential to get some key elements clear. Many freelancers have common characteristics, which stall their advancement. Amongst these, it is common to find freelancers concentrating on the work that has to be done immediately even though it offers little financial returns, is boring and time-consuming. This seriously curbs all career prospects and creates unsatisfied web designers.

Those freelancers that spend their days looking for projects and desperately trying to get the fund rolling in are limiting all future prospects. First of all, because easily attainable jobs offer bad pay and secondly, because most of these jobs are outsourced by someone else who does not have time for this time-consuming and monotonous jobs. If another freelancer cannot be bothered with these projects, why should you?

A better solution is to spend more time advertising your professional skills and not seeking reject jobs. This will allow you to put more value on your professional skills offering you to better projects and more rewarding relationships with actual clients. Initially, you will need to spend some time and money to find these clients but on the long term it is sure to be rewarding.

As a freelancer you should start creating your brand and company name and proposing your services for more lucrative projects. Create your own product as you have the ability as a web designer to come up with some effective advertising material. Use your skills to promote yourself, even if it may cost you some time and steer you momentarily away from more lucrative activities. Remember you are investing for your future.

Concentrate your effort on posting your logo and product on WordPress, blogs, marketplaces, applications and any product that may attract clients and other web designers. Nowadays like in most other fields, value for skill and work is on the decline, this is why it is imperative that you put your professionalism and skills in the forefront, as quality work will get paid.

Think ahead. In a few years time web designers will probably no longer be successful because they are experts with web page layouts or can create exceptional designs. The ones who will be successful are those who have invested their time and money in long-term projects and working at developing their business with the use of networking.

As a web designer people naturally assume you are talented, and there are plenty of good web designers out there. The point is you have to learn how to market your talent if you want to sell it for what it is worth. This is the key to a successful long-term career.

You can be the best web designer on the market, but if you do not know how to manage your relationship with clients it will not do you any good. If you start off on the right foot as soon as your project is launched, you have already paved the way to success, no matter how skilled or not you are as a web designer.

All web designers should learn how to work in an ordered and disciplined way. You will need to plan beforehand and stick to a regular schedule, providing frequent updates to your client and vice versa. Thoughtful planning makes work easier and although many web designers or developers do draw out an initial plan to follow, very soon the overflow of work buries these good intentions and the workload seems impossible. So stick to your schedule and make sure every week all has been registered, covered and is ready for the following week.

It is important you keep up with important issues the client needs to keep his attention on, by underlining the issues within the stipulated time frames. This will spur the client into regular action and avoid issues being left behind. You need to remind your client constantly so that you can manage your project as efficiently as possible. Keep in mind that he too has a company to run and it is up to you to keep a steady communication flow.

Another important factor in the relationship with a client is that he or she should be considered a member of your web designing team and not an enemy. Cooperation and good interaction throughout the project will help to enhance the final result. It may help to have someone specifically nominated within your client’s company with whom you can communicate directly whenever you need to. This interactive relationship will help smooth out the procedures and allow you to overcome any obstacles effectively as well as avoid mix-ups.

Collaborate with you clients and show them you are available for any help they may need with various tasks related with the project, although these may not be paid for. A client will greatly appreciate any small concession you can give, which can make a great difference to him or her and only be a minor effort on your part.

You can even prepare some sample pieces of microcopy and sent them off for approval in order to keep your project going and avoid delays. Even though this may not be something you should be doing, it may be worth considering if you wish to save a project from being stalled. All things you can do to help a client are bound to work to your advantage in the long term. Even if you do have to concede a few hours as a bonus, this can keep your project going and be greatly appreciated by your client who will no doubt offer positive feedback.

All the time you offer to your client will eventually payback and can keep your project on track as well as providing a successful relationship with your clients.

Technology over the years has changed dramatically and along with it, the job as a web designer has become increasingly more difficult. The astronomical rate at which technology changes, require us to continue our education in the field on a regular basis. Additionally, we are expected to network to stay in business.

All of the learning, networking, and actually doing our job requires endless amounts of time. However, the last time I looked there are still only seven days in a week and 24 hours in a day. The job is expected to become even more intense and if this is the case, we will all fail from lack of time and utter exhaustion.

There is a way to battle this phenomenon. You simply must learn to use your time more wisely. Instead of working more hours, be smarter about the hours that you do work. If you do not learn to do this, you will simply become ill and depressed after a period.

There are five secrets that every web designer needs to know in order to become more efficient and avoid burn out. The first secret is of course, organization.

1. Get Organized

When it comes to being organized, many of us simply do not put forth the effort to stay organized and focused. When you have a deadline to meet, it is much easier to just let our organizational habits go away and simply focus on the task at hand.

There is a problem with this type of approach. When you are unorganized, chances are you will be less productive. There are several approaches a person can use to get and stay organized. The most important thing is to choose one and make sure that you stick with the method no matter what happens.

2. Get Rid of Distractions

When you are working online all day, there are plenty of things to keep you distracted. Facebook, Twitter, and email to name a few, not to mention all of the various articles and videos to look at. Add the telephone into the equation and you wonder how you are ever going to get anything done.

While you cannot remove all of the distractions, you can control how much you are distracted by them. If you have alerts set up for when you get a new email, tweet, or Facebook message, turn them off. Check them manually when you are taking a break from your work. The same goes for the phone, turn the ringer off while you are working.

3. Focus

It is important to figure out when you are the most energetic and focused. Some people work better at night, others in the morning. Some of us can pound out a lot of work in a short amount of time and others can focus for longer periods. The key is to figure out what works for you.

If you cannot sit for long periods of time and have total focus on your work, try this approach. Set a timer for 25 minutes and work for that period. When the timer goes off, take a five minute break and then come back to work for another 25.

When you have a task that is going to require extreme concentration, schedule yourself to work on it during the time you have the most energy, the mornings, evenings, or late at night.

4. Outsource

If there is part of the job that you simply hate doing or are not good at doing, find someone else to do it for you. As a freelancer, you spend a lot of time searching for jobs and performing administrative tasks. This takes time away from doing the work that we are good at for no real reason. There are plenty of people out there that will take on these tasks for us at a very low cost. Considering hiring someone else to do some of the clerical work for you. This will save time and allow you to earn more money overall as you will complete tasks much faster.

5. Recycle

When you take on a new job, how often do you find that you are coding the same list of articles for a site? Most of us do the same work over and over again, when we could simply save and build on some of our old work. In addition, look online for work that other people have done and made available for free.

You may think this article is silly and just another one of the million lists of tips and tricks available online. However, if you take the time to really think about how you work, it is likely you will find that you are not as efficient or as smart about your work habits as you think. Start with one of the tips above and move on from there, you will be surprised at the stress relief.

Ribbons and tags are by far the most discreet and silent of the web designer tools. When browsing various websites users do not often notice these applications within the websites, although if you look carefully you will realize that most websites have a common pattern. One of these shared traits is the use of ribbons and tags within the website’s design that attract the attention on certain points.

They are becoming increasingly common and some say even overused in websites. Tags and ribbons are often used together to focus on one main objective, attracting the users’ attention.

A ribbon perfectly describes what this is used for in websites as it is in fact shaped as a ribbon and helps emphasize a sentence or an area within the page. A tag, whose definition may be less obvious, is a label that is used at the top of website pages to mark an area on the screen.

Most of the websites that have adopted tags and ribbons are without doubt the best around as far as quality is concerned as they really do provide outstanding design options and attractive web pages.

Why are tags and ribbons so effective?
The first most obvious trait is that they draw the readers’ attention as they give the impression the page is a three dimensional area with a tangible background. This effect allows the text to come forward towards the reader who is subconsciously drawn to the content. Many tags are designed to have an impact, whether with the use of three dimensional effects or other appearances such as color or contrasting effects.

Most web designers place these ribbons and tags in important areas on the web page, to drive users’ attention towards these. When designing the website, keep in mind which are your priorities and then place the ribbons or tags near these. Often tags and ribbons work together towards the same end and should be placed next to important information. Ribbons, unlike tags can take on quite a few different forms and their shape can take on a form of an arrow pointing at a precise area in the web page.

Tags and ribbons can take on a fabric texture or natural element, a trait that greatly attracts users. Although these are only digital reproductions of organic materials or related elements, they add texture and life to the web design.

Ribbons lead the reader towards the top of the page, thus subtly inducing the user to start from the beginning of the article or page. This is important because users tend to browse quickly through the pages without really paying attention and more often than not will skip the first paragraph, which is the one that is meant to convince the reader to stay on that page. Ribbons are also an excellent way to bring web page headers to the forefront.

You will find that most quality websites use tags and ribbons for specific needs, while at the same time adding a unique visual effect that focuses the readers’ attention on what is important in the website. This means that users can browse through the website more effectively and will be satisfied by the content simply because they have been “guided” through it.
