Web mastering has been around for as long as websites have. The science has developed over the years, with recorded consistency, even with newer arising technologies. The job description of a webmaster has been changing too. What’s certain though is that a webmaster is the most important person as far as website maintenance is concerned. Unless a website is free, a webmaster has to be around to ensure the proper workings of a website. For small organizations, webmasters work on a contract basis, though it’s not unusual to get one that is permanently responsible for a website, or a couple of them. For said small organizations, one webmaster is sufficient, more so if they are all rounded and contains all the skills required to create and maintain a site. For larger companies or organizations, many webmasters are required, sometimes in tens to take care of a website and all its diverse needs.

A webmaster is marketable depending on the skill set that they have. At very basic, they should be versed in HTML and in Programming regardless of whether it’s C, C++ or Perl. Programming is divided into the server side and the client side, and this is where programmes such as Ajax, JavaScript, Flash, ASP, PHP, Java come in. its important that they also understand how to configure the server to run the software, and deal with any software-hardware incompatibilities. This is as far as their skills go.

A webmaster is involved in creating a site from scratch till the final part which is posting it on the internet. Their involvement is based on their expertise. Knowledge in graphic or web design is valued, since this enables them to participate in designing the website and creating the basic layout. They consult with a graphic designer, and also the client, to ensure that everything is going according to plan. As far as content developing is concerned, the webmaster may not necessarily take part in. But they do ensure that the content written is consistent with the purpose of the site. If they have the writing expertise, they can be involved. Once every other specific has been addressed, the website is registered and posted on the internet. The webmaster is in charge of making the website known to the different search engines there are, and also in ensuring that it is accessible by all of them.

The job of maintaining a website is an ongoing one, and this is the primary job of the webmaster. They have to monitor the site, track the traffic and conceive ways of increasing it, ensure the site never experiences down times, and manage the placement of new content and decide the frequency in which new material should be created. It’s a regular task, though there are days when there is lesser to be done. There is flexibility, especially when working on a contract basis, and besides the financial part, this is the other reason most web developers, engineers, designers, and even technical writers get into the field of web mastering.
