The computer world is dynamic and is ever changing. Newer versions of applications are introduced from time to time. These new versions are much better compared to the previous ones. It is important to ensure that you have the latest version of the application including wordpress. Newer versions of wordpress have many new amazing features that make functions of the site much easier. If you would like to update you wordpress application, you will need to follow some guidelines to ensure that the transition process is smooth.
The first you need to look at is the requirements of the new version before proceeding with the update. Confirm with your web host provider that they have the required versions of the PHP and MySQL. These two are important in facilitating wordpress update and if your host provider does not have latest versions, then update may not be possible at that particular time. It is important to have a web host provider who ensures that they have all the relevant requirements to facilitate such actions.

Although there may be new versions of wordpress, you cannot be able to determine whether they will work with your site. You may sometime download and install a newer version of an application only to realize that it cannot work with your site at that time. It is therefore important to create wordpress backups before you install the new version. If the newer version of wordpress does not work at that time, you can always revert to the previous version. You can request the hosting provider to create a back up for you or you can make the back up on own.

Most of the time, the plugins in your site will not be able to work with the latest version of the wordpress. It is advisable to disable your plugins whenever you intend to update your wordpress site. If you do not do this, there may be function problems with the upgrade. This is an easy action because all you need to do is to head to the manage plugins page found in the dashboard, change the bulk actions to deactivate plugins. If you have the backup and plugins are deactivated, you can proceed with the update process.

You can update the wordpress site either through automatic update or manual update. It is important to ensure that your site can be updated any time there is newer version of wordpress. You can ensure this by turning on automatic updates at all times. However, should always have daily backup of the site just in case the site is updated automatically and does not work. This can be done by using email backup which is done daily.

In the manual update, you will just download the latest version from wordpress.com site which comes as a zipped folder. Extract the downloaded files in the folder then head to the wordpress admin area and delete the WP-includes and WP-admin directories from your site. Then, upload the new WP-includes and wp-admin files using either shell access or FTP. Make sure you overwrite the previous files with the newer version of wordpress. Upload individual files to the wp-content folder. Finally, update all the loose files to the root directory.
