Are there too Many Blogs?

Web Design | on Jul. 14, 2011 | by 0 Comments

It was not that long ago when the world of blogging opened up to people everywhere. Both companies and individuals wanted a way to reach people and they saw blogging as the way to go about it. From this, suddenly there were thousands of informational pages published on the web, about how to start a blog, how to make money from blogging, getting more traffic from your blog, etc.

The question is, has the blogosphere become so large that there is simply too many blogs out there?

The Size of the Blogosphere

Understanding how big the blogosphere really is can be mind blowing. While there is no way of really knowing how many blogs there are, it is possible to get a estimate. WordPress has statistics for both their self hosted WordPress installations and the WordPress site, which add up to 32.5 million blogs.

More than 10 million blogs are on Tumblr and Technorati currently tracks over 1.2 million blogs. Blogger does not have any public information about how many blogs that they host, but already you can get a pretty clear picture of how many blogs are out there. These numbers do not even include some of the other sites that offer blog services such as Expression Engine, TypePad, Moveable Type, and several others.

If you are looking for a number, it is probably safe to say that there are currently over a hundred million blogs that are active right now. Additionally, there are more blogs created every day. There are people with more than one blog and have plans to create even more. Not to mention, all of the blogs that are out there have been abandoned for whatever reason.

So, who are These Bloggers?

Bloggers can be broken down into three main categories, with some overlap of the different types of blogs on each.

Personal Blog

The first type of blog is the personal blog. These blogs are run by an individual and typically are a reflection of what they feel about certain topics and issues. Most of the people that have a personal blog are not thinking about making money from it, but rather are using it as a hobby. These blogs will have a few hundred to less than a thousand visitors a month and the writers are not worried about who views it.

Topic Blogs

These types of blogs are usually run by more than one person and cover a particular topic or area of interest. A topic blog that has unique content and is written well can easily surpass the thousand visitors per month benchmark. However, most topic bloggers do not put forth the effort to get their blogs past that point.

Corporate Blogs
These blogs are run by companies as an activity for their business. Some of these blogs are doing quite well and come off as more of a personal or topic blog. Other corporate blogs are simply full of spam, with only information such as press releases to support their new products.
The problem is that there is simply an overload of bloggers out there. If you currently do not have a blog and have been considering starting one, you need to think about why. If you just want to post links to documents or other such things then a Twitter account or Facebook page may be a better answer.
