Different webmasters create their wordpress sites differently depending on what they intend to achieve. The common thing about all webmasters is that they would like to maximize whatever they have to attract as many visitors as possible. They want to entice their viewers to keep coming to their sites using several strategies. To ensure this, you can entice your users by putting an extract of the article or post in your homepage. If you have included a part of your works in the homepage, you will need to have the read more tag or link to allow users to access the entire article or post.

The read more link can be added using several techniques depending on your preference. You can put the read more tab displayed or hidden. Displayed read more tab is said to be false while the hidden tab is said to be true. You can put the read more tab such that the users are directed to the current page or be redirected to another page. By default when the read more tab is clicked on, the webpage loads to the location where the entire content is. This phenomenon is called jumping and can be changed according to your preference. These settings are changed in the theme’s function php.

You have the option to style the read more tab the way you would like. While some webmasters would like to put the read more words where appropriate, other webmasters would like to put some symbols like >>> to designate the read more. You can make the font of the read smaller compared to other texts while using the read more text instead of symbols. Changing these settings can be done on the css style sheet. You can bold, italicize, make the font smaller or even change the colour of the read more tab using the CSS.

CSS allows to do much more on the wordpress site including the more tag. Amazingly, you can add an image to the read more tag to supplement the texts or the symbols. Images make your site to look much better and appealing. You can add images by listing the image on the content () template tag. This code uses the ALT and TITLE in the image tag. CSS also allows you to add styles to the image in the more tag. Another strategy is to use a CSS background image. You have to allow the image to appear behind the text or the symbol depending on what you are using. The image can be costumed using pixels, for example you could set the pixels of the image to be 100px width and 50 pixel height with a padding of 10px50px15px and 5px.
It is important to remember that the read more text, symbol or image is used on the home page only, it does not apply to the other pages. However, you can add the read more text, image or symbol on the other pages. All you need to do is to add the relevant code in the loop for the dynamic content.
