How to Aim Your Web Design Features to Different Age Groups

When you are designing a website, diversity is what you need to aim at, as it will lead to the success of your business. This said, not all websites are aimed at a specific age group and may need to be structured in a different way to be attractive and readable for a specific category of people. So, when you start your web design for a certain client, focusing on the age group is essential.

The different age groups will determine how you are going to proceed with the user and access interface in your web design, keeping into account the psychological aspect of the web design. There are other issues that should be considered too, depending on your readers’ age group.

Everyone uses Internet nowadays and ages can vary considerably, as can the ability to use and access online tools. Although a website should try to create a more general and adaptable platform so that most readers can understand and use it easily, not all readers will be able to interact.

A deeper understanding of your audience, along with a logical and mindful deduction, will allow you to cover a larger spectrum of readers and avoid focusing on only one type of reader. On one end you have the older generations who are still not comfortable with computers even though they have access to many books specifically aimed at teaching them how to use the Internet, while on the other end, you are dealing with young children who are approaching the Internet for the first time.

It is important to learn how to design for these age groups as the population of senior citizens is increasing and becoming more dependent on the Internet, while the younger generations will be your future readers and even customers. When defining age groups, you should keep in mind that the age range will get narrower as the audience gets younger, this is important when designing your web site.

Young children nowadays, need the website to be interactive as much as possible, as even the very young users between the ages of four to six are gaining experience and can take more complex forms and devices. However, when designing a website for young children their physical development should be taken into consideration and the website should be adapted to this variable.

Teenagers do not face the obstacle of comprehension, it will be easier for them to adapt. Teenagers in general will have more skills in using social networks and other computer technology, while pre-teenagers will less at ease with devices that are too sophisticated.

Adults are the larger portion of users today and are generally used to test how well a website works on the general public. However, if you rely solely on this age group, your website may start showing its limitations, as more and more young people are accessing the Internet nowadays.

If you do wish to focus your website on the adult category you should not take the users’ ability in using computer technology for granted. Not all people really understand how to use the Internet and similar technological devices. In fact, most people do not. Although this is true, many adults usually do not need to rely on instructions in order to browse through a website and interact with the various options.
